This Bridge Boasts a Haunting Musical Secret [Design]

Imagine a traveler’s surprise as they walk across artist Mark Nixon’s Chimecco and the hidden chimes begin to play a ghostly tune. If they don’t jump off the bridge in terror, they’ll probably get to enjoy a nice haunting song. More »

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.

It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.

A closer look at Verizon’s Samsung slider with Android 2.3.4 and LTE

Samsung Verizon slider

It’s been a couple weeks now since we got a very slight peek at what appeared to be a Samsung slider on Verizon. Let’s get a little closer look, shall we? The pic you see above (and a couple more after the break) just hit our inbox. And, sure enough, the as-yet unannounced device looks a whole lot like Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G.

We’d imagine that if indeed this unnamed piece of Android goodness ends up seeing release on Verizon, it’ll be of the Galaxy S II variety. And while it’s nearly a dead ringer for the Epic 4G, the keyboard’s been tweaked every so slightly. The shift and fn buttons have been moved, and what appears to be an Internet shortcut key has been added, and the emoticon key — which ridiculously found itself as a dedicated key on the Epic 4G — has been relegated to secondary status on the space bar.

What else do we know? It looks like it’s running Android 2.3.4, which any release at this point of the year should definitely have.

Also note the 4G LTE icon in the status bar. We’ve all been wondering why the Motorola Droid 3 got such a low-key launch on Verizon. Jerry’s suspected that it was because the D3 is 3G only. And if this Samsung slider indeed sees release as a 4G device, it looks like he’ll be able to chalk that one in the win column.

Update: Got a few more details. The screen is described as "awesome." (Never mind these blurrycam pics.) Better than the Fascinate, we’re told, and our tipster is thinking it could well be a Super AMOLED Plus screen, which packs in more subpixels than a mere Super AMOLED screen. It’s also said to run faster than the Fascinate. Internal storage is 2.17GB after hard reset. It’s got a 5MP camera on the back, and 1.3MP up front.

Couple more pics after the break.

Thanks, anon!

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S 2 (the Within) for Sprint?

Sprint Samsung phone

There’s not a whole lot to go on, but it looks like the fellas over at This is my next got their hands on a couple pictures of the Galaxy S 2 (the Samsung Within) destined for Sprint.  From the above image you can clearly see the Samsung and Sprint logo, paired up with an 8MP camera, and another picture (after the break) shows a small portion of what could be an "about phone" screen showing Sprint as the network operator.

We expect Samsung to release the Galaxy S 2 on every major US carrier eventually, but this is the first sign of one being in production that we’ve seen.  When you add the Within to the line-up that includes the EVO 3D and the Motorola Photon, it’s apparent — Sprint has some killer Android phones.

iSites overhauled, now lets you publish cloud-based HTML5 iPhone apps in minutes

iSites — a zero-code cloud-based ‘app creator’ — can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed ‘InstantApp’, you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven’t looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn’t a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple’s chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done — it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps — which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites’ new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search

Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google’s official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search’s polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers

burritobison

Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you’re into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you’re a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you’re abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you’re being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don’t give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It’s a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!
